Make Some Snow

How do you give technology a heart? You could always ask WALL-E… But in all seriousness, doing that is always a challenge.

But with Snow Day, we did just that. A game that challenged our audience to catch 1 million virtual snowflakes with their tongues and in so doing, give the school kids in New Orleans an actual snow-filled snow day.

With a first-of-its-kind augmented reality experience via breakthrough facial recognition and motion-tracking software, we created a fun, fast, and feisty webcam game with social media connectivity.

SET UP

Catching snowflakes with your tongue was transformed into a first-of-its-kind augmented reality game. Breakthrough facial recognition and motion-tracking software drove a fun and feisty webcam game, while social media connectivity helped it go viral, racheting up over a million snowflakes caught in just one week.

GAMEPLAY

Using motion tracking algorithms, Snowday could determine when a person’s mouth was open and track their tongue as it “caught” snowflakes. It marked the first time a body part as small as the tongue could be detected without help from “cheats” like QR codes.

Snow day went viral in 49 out of 50 states and over 60 countries, and over a million snowflakes were caught in a week. And to reward the students, we delivered on the promise, blanketing a slice of New Orleans with snow—the first snow most of the kids had ever seen.

The snow melted, and Rosetta cleaned up with industry awards for both creativity and first-in-class technology.

New Orleans EVENT

Blanketing part of City Park with six inches of snow provided a magical playground for hundreds of schoolkids during an otherwise warm February day in New Orleans. Free face-painting, food and a visit from Frosty rounded out this community outreach event.
